Hayal is a neighbor of the Greening the Desert site (https://greeningthedesertproject.org) and has a young family with seven children. Their home has an established permaculture site with a distinct food forest. They have chickens adding fertility to the system. They’ve added some solar energy. There are two production gardens, recently cultivated wicking beds, and few beehives around. The winter garden is underway and generates income for the family. The food forest is very straightforward with drip irrigation throughout, micro-swales, and a composting system. This is a true local system with real production, but aside from the permaculture cash crop scenario, sections of the garden are also aesthetic. There is even a chlorine-free swimming pool that is filled with irrigation water for few days, after which it is pumped into the garden, and the pool is filled again so the kids can swim.

About Geoff:

Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world’s extreme climates — information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.

About Permaculture:

Permaculture (https://permaculturenews.org/what-is-...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies – imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.
