Mexico's National Day takes place on September 16th.

The day marks the start of the War of Independence against Spain on September 16th 1810.

Let's take a look at the History of this Holiday.

On September 16th 1810, in the village of Dolores, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla made a proclamation.

Hidalgo called for an end to Spanish rule in Mexico, encouraging rebellion and insurrection!

Following his speech, Father Hidalgo raised an army and attempted to overthrow the Junta government, but he was eventually defeated.

Despite his defeat, his courage lit the flames of liberation and ignited the War of Independence.

After a ten year long war, Mexico's independence was finally acknowledged by the Spanish viceroy on September 27th 1821.

The official name of Mexico is Estados Únidos Mexicanos (United Mexican States).
