Blue Velvet - "In Dreams, I Walk With You..." (Analysis)

Welcome to Part 3 in my 10 part series on the original works of David Lynch! This video discusses the themes of gender, patriarchal abuse, media critique, and 50's/80's cultural critique in Blue Velvet. Blue Velvet is about the way in which patriarchal gender relations can create abuse dynamics that subjugate and allow both the objectification of & violence against women. It uses a distinctly 50's aesthetic to comment on the resurgence of 50's norms and the general nostalgia for 1950's political and media climates that occurred in the 1980's. Blue Velvet is a deconstruction of the film noir genre and the built in misogyny of mainstream movie-making.
