What is Demat account number?
DP ID + Client ID = Demat Account number

1) A Demat Account can be opened with any retail broking sites which act as a depository participant (DP).
2) Your retail broking service provider must be registered with either NSDL or CDSL which gives them the licence to open your demat account.
3) Once you open demat account, you will receive a welcome message from your depository with all the details and this includes the Demat Account number.
4) Your Demat Account number will be a 16 digit number, out of which the first 8 digits will be the DP ID and last 8 digits will be the Client ID.
5) In case your depository is NSDL, the Demat account number will start with “IN” followed by 6 digit DP ID and 8 digit client ID
For example, IN12345612345678
(DP ID - 123456, Client ID - 12345678)
6) In case your depository is CDSL, entire 16 characters are numbers. The first 8 will be the DP ID and last 8 are the client ID
For example, 1234567887654321
(DP ID - 12345678 and Client ID - 87654321
