Hannah Thorogood from the Inkpot Organic Farm in Lincolnshire explains how she has regenerated an exhausted pasture to a richly diverse and thriving holding. She explains how she uses ‘flerds’ (cows, sheep and goats combined) and holistic planned grazing to regenerate the soil and pasture. Her methods also sequester a huge amount of carbon by allowing the grass to grow tall, grazing it closely, then following this with chickens 3-5 days later to scratch for maggots, spreading the dung. Dung beetles also take the dung below the surface and the land is then rested it for three months.

This regenerative process doesn’t only fertilise and feed the soil, it also encourages methanotrophs that breathe in methane and breathe out oxygen. Farming this way, animals do not add methane to the atmosphere and indeed carbon is locked up in the soil.

Hannah also explains why the Inkpot is a permaculture farm and describes all the various methods of income generation and skill sharing. What an amazing place!

The farm sells high welfare wool from organic sheep shorn by Hannah, traditionally milled, ready to knit and posted internationally.
