We all want our horses to stand still while we groom and care for them.  The best way to train this behavior is by making it an awesome experience for your horse.  Here is a session I'm having with Flora, a Rocky Mountain horse with a history of trauma.  We are working at liberty using the principles of Operant Conditioning, Learning Theory, and compassionate communication with Clicker Training.  She is free to move away anytime, which is very important for a horse who is fearful around people.  She is also able to eat the grass at her feet anytime, but you'll see by reinforcing her for keeping her head up she decides that staying engaged with me is more interesting or enjoyable.  I am also actively changing my behavior in response to how she responds to me.  I want to make it a collaborative experience, one in which she feels safe and eager to interact and learn.  It's easy to use force to make a horse do what we want, but that removes choice and can create fear and anxiety.  It's far more pleasant for you and your equine friend to use welfare-centered methods that build trust, confidence, relaxation, and a cooperative partnership.  PureJoyHorsemanship.com
