The assassination of Abraham Lincoln unfolded on the evening of April 14, 1865, as he attended a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Seated in the President's box on the balcony level, Lincoln had an unimpeded view of the stage. Meanwhile, John Wilkes Booth, a sympathizer of the Confederate cause, surreptitiously entered the theatre's backstage area and approached the Presidential box. A critical detail emerged: the President's designated bodyguard, John F. Parker, should have been vigilant; however, he was absent due to a perceived lack of threats. Exploiting this opportunity, Booth approached Lincoln from behind and fired a single bullet into the back of his head, delivering a fatal blow by severing his spinal cord. The sudden sound of the gunshot startled the audience, plunging them into chaos and terror.
