There are 4 ways for you to diagnose if your ECU is causing problems in your car... 1. Try to do a visual inspection for any obvious signs of damage - You are going to perform a visual inspection. First, retrieve your computer and take the covers off and inspect the circuit board. If you see that it has water damage or a burnt electrical component, that means you have to replace the ECU. 2. Swap the ECU (In newer cars from 1995 forward programming is necessary) - If you don’t see anything wrong visually, try performing a swap. Swaps are easy to do on older cars where programming isn’t a factor, but with new, advanced cars only sometimes you can diagnose issues by doing a swap. For example, let’s assume you have problems communicating to the original ECU in your car and find another one with the exact same part number. Once you install the new ECU in your car and you regain communication, that’s a hint you have to replace the ECU. 3. Use a Scanner to read the fault codes from the ECU - You can always use a scanner because the scanner communicates with the ECU and sometimes the ECU can diagnose itself, showing that it’s damaged and that should hint that you must replace the ECU. Get this scanner: amzn.to/3z5Jva3 4. Go by the Process of Elimination (Part 2) - If none of the above approaches give you the answer you’re looking for, you can always conduct a process of elimination.
