Gravel bikes have exploded in the past few years and for good reason - they allow you to go explore where a road bike would normally wince, for fear of a puncture, pedal knocks or worse. They open up bike packing opportunities and can replace many a cross-country hardtail mountain bike for those who tend to stick to only to fire trails.
Versatility and adaptability are key to what makes gravel bikes great and that’s what Marin have done with their beyond-road range. Here we have the Gestalt X11, and as Marin describes, its the Mountain bikers drop bar bike and is the best bike in the range if you want something fast and aggressive, love to throw the bike around on some singletrack, but are still down to do some long gravel grinds and adventures.
The Gestalt X11 makes no apologies as being the model sitting on atop of the range. Starting with the frame, it is built out of lightweight 6061 Aluminum, providing great stiffness under power and compliance on rougher surfaces. The geometry has utilised some of the trends from mountain biking to improve its stability while descending and still fulfilling Marin's mantra of just for fun. This was done by slackening the head angle, increasing the reach and modifying the seat tube to have the shortest chainstays possible, while still being able to fit 700x42c tyres or bigger volume 650x47c tyres. The standover is super low and combined with the dropper post you will be able to move freely around the bike and dismount and mount with ease. The stack height is right in the middle of an endurance all-day bike and race bike meaning you can race it on the weekend and ride as long as you want on your next adventure. Again versatility was the focus here.
The mountain bike core of the X11 can be seen in the spec. 1x drivetrains, dropper posts, and hydraulic disc brakes have changed the industry and have proved essential in evolving what is capable on a mountain bike, so it's awesome to see the trickle-down to gravel bikes. A dropper post is a game-changer for descending and I couldn't see myself riding a mountain bike without one, so seeing how capable the gestalt is on singletrack I don't think I will see myself without one on my gravel bike too. The X11 also has a handy trick up its sleeve, often seen on bikes that cost twice as much. The left shifter, which is now freed up thanks to the 1x drivetrain, which now actuates the dropper post allowing you to get your weight back on the descents with ease, providing a safer, more confident ride. The SRAM Rival 1x11 drivetrain is a real highlight too, offering reliable shifting and chain retention thanks to the clutch and FSA narrow-wide chainring. The importance of hydraulic disc brakes can't be overstated but to reiterate more control, power, and consistency in all conditions, who doesn't like that. To round it all off you get a tubeless-ready 700c wheelset and a pair of WTB Riddler 37c Tubeless tyres, which are the aftermarket choice for many. It’s awesome to know that once you have made your initial investment Marin has ensured that you don't need to spend any more to get a dialed bike.
What we love about the Gestalt X is its versatility and in a time where many of us are shrinking down our fleet the Gestalt X can Triple as a commuter, cyclocross, or gravel race bike and adventure bike. Thanks to its lightweight frame, geometry and tyre clearance the Gestalt X lets you pick the adventure.
