Sharif Hussein, whose full name was Hussein bin Ali al-Hashimi, was born in Istanbul in 1852. He belonged to an old family in charge of protecting Mecca. Between 1856 and 1858, he stayed in Mecca during his grandfather’s emirate and then returned to Istanbul. In 1861, upon the death of his father, he went to Mecca with his uncle Emir Abdullah and completed his education there.
Why did Arabs BETRAY the Ottoman Empire?
In 1893, he was summoned to Istanbul by Sultan Abdülhamit Khan because of his intrigues for the Arabs to revolt in Mecca where he stayed until 1893. His excessive intimacy with the British and his unreliable and passionate character attracted the attention of Sultan Abdülhamit Khan. In order to be in the public eye, he was given a simple task in the palace. Thus, Sharif Hussein lived in Istanbul with his family for 16 years in the mansion allocated to him.
However, after Sultan Abdul Hamid II was deposed, he was appointed as the emir of Mecca in place of his uncle who had died with an interesting decision and sent to Mecca.
