Video Description: Life on the island has been great so far, we are still meeting new people and learning new stories about the place we live. In this episode we meet with our nearby neighbors to explore a village called Dongcun (Eastern Village). The village in this island is over 2000 years old but has some remarkable secrets buried within its walls. The past Emperor Qianlong was often out for travel and when he came to this Dongcun, he would wear a disguise to avoid being recognized publicly but on his first trip to Dongcun he met a young woman named Yin and fell in love. This village became a place that he would often return to over time. He loved Yin but he could not take her back to Beijing to be in the Forbidden City with him because of her heritage. Soon after this meeting she became pregnant and had she not been a Han Chinese, Qianlong would have made her his wife. Because of this minor detail, the Emperor had to keep this child and affair a secret and asked a wealthy business man to marry her as it is shameful to become pregnant out of marriage and they could not be wed because of their ethnic backgrounds. Qianlong sent some people to this business mans house to carve the 12 Chinese dragons into the wooden windows. Today there is still the descendants of this business man living in this house today. It is unknown what became of the child and Miss Yin but we would like to believe that their stories of secrecy and love have been passed on to future generations. After visiting Jingxiu Hall we explored some other ancient buildings and a residential house that belong to my neighbors family. It is one of the last remaining houses with the ‘Mén Dāng Hù Duí’ in Xishan Island. The origin of ‘Mén Dāng Hù Duí’ derived from ancient Chinese architecture. This was an exciting house to visit as the family members still live here and you can visually see the age of the home. Many of the items here are coated in a thick layer of dust and seemingly randomly placed. There is a bicycle sitting in the courtyard and several paintings hung on the wall. The center support beams are engraved with different flowers to represent each of the seasons. To me this feels like living history. These places have stood the test of time and show no signs of falling apart anytime soon.
