Hip bone anatomy lesson of pelvic girdle: The hip bones (also called innominate bones, os coxae, coxal bones, or pelvic bones) form part of the appendicular skeleton.

Those bones provide protection for the pelvic organs, provide a place for muscle and ligament attachment, and connect the lower limbs of the appendicular skeleton to the sacrum of the axial skeleton.

The hip bones (pelvic girdle) are made of three bones that began as independent bones but later fused to form one solid bone: The ilium, ischium, and pubis.
