Any chord progression wants to resolve somewhere. For example, the simple progression F major, G major and C major resolves to C major. The chord in the middle, G, can be thought of as a passing chord. That makes it "weaker" compared to the target, C. The listener's ear is actually willing to "forgive" changes to voicings, scales and pretty much anything when it comes to passing chords! Let me show you in this video how you can use this to really get away with some interesting chord voicings and tensions that make the progression actually sound fuller and more mature.
