⋙Persephone, the only daughter of
⋙Persephone, the only daughter of Zeus + Demeter. Hades, god of the underworld, fell in love with her one day when he saw her picking flowers in a field.
⋙Hades asked Zeus for permission to marry her, he agreed, but cautioned Hades against Demeter, who would not view the union as kindly.
⋙Demeter wreaked havoc, unable to find her daughter. She threatened to make the earth barren forever and thus destroy all of humankind if she did not find Persephone.
⋙A full year of famine plagued the land until Zeus relented and agreed to get Persephone back.
⋙Persephone, ridden with grief, had refused to eat in her time in the underworld, until finally, upon hearing about the news that she would be going home, she bit into a pomegranate offered to her by Hades.
⋙Since Persephone had eaten there, she had to dwell at least part of every year in the Underworld. She would spend six months as Queen of the Underworld and the rest of the year with Demeter. Thus the seasons were born.
⋙Spring arrives when Persephone ascends back to earth and Winter takes its place when she returns to the underworld, as its queen.
