In a small town in the American West, John Chandler consults Dr. Enos Davis, for his son David, who has been rendered mute by a traumatic shock. The doctor, powerless, recommends it to a specialist colleague. Leaving the doctor's office, John is caught in a fight with the sons of Harry Burleigh, a sheep farmer. Brought before the court, he escapes prison thanks to the intervention of Linnett Moore, a widow managing her farm alone, who collects Chandler for community service. Soon, the opportunity arises to send David to consult the specialist, but the money is short and moreover, John is again confronted with the Burleigh clan.
