Welcome to our video series Backyard Biodiversity with Linda Jennings, Herbarium Collections Curator @pressedplants

One of my favorite Pacific northwest maple trees, Vine Maple! In our understory forests and you can really notice this tree at this time of year with its beautiful green bark and its ‘vining’ growth habit (bending over). Not only is this tree beautiful but its fruits, or samaras, are also really fun to play with. Pick a samara and twirl the fruit stalk between your fingers to see if you can get them to ‘helicopter’ fly. This is their clever seed dispersal mechanism to ‘fly’ as far away from their parent plant, as no one want to live too close to their parents once they mature, right?!

I did record this way back in August and it's already November! How did that happen?! So… you will probably have to wait for next year to play with really fun fruits. Don’t forget to enjoy your backyard biodiversity while staying safe!
