Location : Kota Malinau, Kalimantan
Location : Kota Malinau, Kalimantan Utara, Indonesia.
After the climax of the Lundayeh was over it was time to hunt for lunch which was quite a problem for vegetarians like us. Food and its variety is no issue here though as vendors from all over Kalimantan converge here providing a good range if you are meat eater. The only missing thing here is an air conditioned café/bar to sell good coffee and cold beer. While waiting for the other smaller events to fill up the afternoon we spent our time visiting all the booths and talking to the villagers from the remote parts of Malinau, collecting valuable info for our future travel.
Lots of indigenous crafts, dry food, souvenirs, clothings, T shirts, medicine, honey and even furnitures for display and sale.
No money changers here but we noticed a mobile ATM of BNI.
Meanwhile out in the sunny hot field was the blowpipe competition which did not draw much of the crowd’s attention nor ours.
Next on the event list was the Chinese lion dance performance. Never expected the crowd to love it so much. Perhaps most of them never saw a live performance before. The lion dance troupe must have been brought in from Jakarta as I did not think there were many Chinese in Malinau.
We hanged around until nightfall for the live band pop music with some Jakarta artistes to cater to the young ones.
It’s been a long day and time to hit the showers and rest our tired legs. Wished we had the time to cover the whole Irau program which would last until the following week. But coming here unprepared we had to skip for next year.
