Having a nosy along the narrow strip of land between the Ship Canal and the Mersey at Runcorn. There's a mighty lock to look at, three mighty bridges spanning both waterways, and some great photos of the construction of the canal. But then trouble awaits at 'No Man's Land', where I soon discover why few people have actually done this adventure.

The Manchester Ship Canal was one of the last great engineering projects in late 19th century Victorian Britain. It famously connected the docks at Manchester with the Mersey estuary, bypassing Liverpool and allowing ocean vessels right to the heart of Manchester.

Today the Ship Canal lies virtually abandoned a neglected, with only a few boats navigating its route.

The section after Runcorn actually runs alongside the Mersey very closely, leaving a very narrow strip of land cut off from public access. An adventure awaits!
