When you're new to interviews, they can often feel like a mine field, but rest assured the interviewer isn't there to try to catch you out or trip you up. The purpose of the interview is to see if your skill set and personality are the best match for the company and role at hand.

By avoiding these most common interview pitfalls, you can give yourself the best chance of landing the job.

1 – Getting too comfortable

It's important to take time to make sure you are comfortable before you begin the interview, so make sure you take off your coat/jacket and get yourself ready to begin.

This is one piece of advice that can be easily followed in the wrong way and a common pitfall to be wary of is getting too comfortable. Always think about your body language when sitting in front of the interviewer and think about what this is communicating to them. Sitting too laid back in your chair can be telling the interviewers that you are not 100% committed to this role. Instead sit up right in your chair so you are able to project your voice clearly to the interviewer. Taking those extra few seconds before you begin the interview can help you settle any nerves and remain in control. Don't be afraid to ask for a glass of water before you start. All of these small changes can give you a better chance at giving the best interview you can.

2 – Blowing your own trumpet

You need to be able to sell yourself during the interview and this will usually include talking about you and your achievements. Think about your top 3 achievements and be armed and ready for when you need them.

The thing to be careful of here is coming across as if you are simply showing off. If you are boasting about how great you are or how easily you could do this job, it is likely to be perceived by the interviewer as arrogance. To avoid this pitfall, think about how you identified the opportunity and what impact your achievements had. Remember to use real examples as evidence to back up what you are saying. 3 – Airing dirty laundry

During the interview you may be asked to talk about a difficult situation from the past and how you handled it. You should think these through beforehand and make sure that they demonstrate your resilience, determination and your initiative.

The worst thing you can do here is use it as a chance to have a moan about a previous customer or a former work colleague. Moaning about anything, especially an ex or current boss, can portray to the interviewer that you have a poor attitude. The trick here is not to focus on what led to the difficult situation or whose fault it was. Instead explain how you identified the problem, what you did specifically and what the overall result was.

4 – Interview etiquette 101

There is a fine line between putting your personality out there and simply ignoring common interview etiquette. Remember to reign it in when you need to so you don't scare off the interviewer. Rude or inappropriate comments are extremely high risk and low reward.

Having your personality come across is great but remember, their job is see if you are the best person for this position. Small things such as maintaining eye contact shows confidence. And remember, if you have more than one interviewer, direct your answers to both of them. Not only is this common courtesy, it shows you are comfortable in a professional setting.

5 – Do not disturb

With so much going on in your head (making sure you are on time, remembering a copy of your CV, preparing your answers), it's easy to forget the small details. You don't want that sinking feeling when you are in the interview and remember your phone is on in your pocket, praying that your mum doesn't call you too early to see how it all went.

Either using your phone or having it go off during the interview gives the interviewer little choice but to think you are not taking the interview seriously or at the least, not fully prepared. Before you arrive at the building either turn your phone off, put it on flight mode, on silent or on do not disturb mode (it's not like you don't have enough options to choose from). Having no unnecessary interruptions will allow you to shine during the interview.
