Satyakama Jabala appears in Chapter IV of the “Chandogya Upanishad”. Wanting to go out in search of a teacher who would guide him in the path of Self-realisation, the goal of mystic life, he had enquired about his Gotra from his mother.

Satyakama lived in a small hut with his mother Jabala. Satyakama, like his name wanted to study about BRAHMA but he had to know his fathers family name as in those days teachers accepted students from certain families only.

So upon learning about her sons wish to study she told her son,”I don’t know your family name my precious son, but when asked by the Guru tell him just what I have told you”.So Satyakama left with her mother`s blessings .
Soon he came to the ashram of Guru Gautam .On seeing the boy Rishi Gautam asked him,”Of what family are you from my boy?”
Satyakama “Sire, I asked it of my mother. She said: “Child, when you were born, I used to be very busy serving guests at home. I had no time to ask the gotra from your father. Now he is no more. So I do not know it. My name is Jabala and yours, Satyakama. So call yourself Satya- kama -Jabala and say that to your Guru.”

Satyakama replies that he is of uncertain parentage because his mother does not know who the father is. The sage declares that the boy's honesty is the mark of a "Brāhmaṇa, true seeker of the knowledge of the Brahman". He said, “You have proved that you are a Brahmin by your adherence to truth. Bring me the samith (sacred twigs of the peepal tree which are used as fuel), and I shall initiate you.”
