In Delhi, there are three dump yards, where all the trash from the city is thrown. Some people earn their living from this trash. Some children also come here to sort through the trash. The name of this child is Ravia. She is seven years of age. She comes to sort through the trash everyday. She looks for iron, glass, rubber, brass, plastic etc. This is Ravia's house. She brings the trash here and separates it. Her two brothers, Iqbal and Akbar Ali also go to scavenge from the trash sometimes. Akbar Ali can often not go to work because he has Tuberculosis. Ishan Ali often has fever and he also rarely goes to work. Only when Ravia sells the trash is when food is cooked at her home. Ravia's mother has been afflicted by a disease for the last three years. This child has to look after all her needs. This is Rahmat Ali's bed. He can barely leave his bed because he has a breathing problem. He has not earned any money in the last one year, but ten rupees are spent on his medicine every day. Ravia loves him a lot and this is why Ravia works extremely hard. Ravia's smaller sister has boils all over her body but they do not have enough money to get her treated. Except for Ravia, everyone in her family is unwell. Ravia has to earn for all of them, but alone she is not able to earn enough money to treat all of them. When Ravia goes to sort through the trash, she endangers her life. Children sort through the trash bare foot. Getting cut by iron or glass is a regular feature. No one even takes care of these wounds. In the trash thrown by hospitals, there are often needles that pierce the foot entirely. Often, children even get crushed by the trucks that dump the trash in the dump yard. My name is Ashok Kumar and there are a lot of accidents that take place at the dump yard. One day I was sorting though trash and a crane came on top of me. Quickly, a Bengali went on top of the machine and switched it off. My name is Deni Kumar. One day I was sorting though trash and I heard people screaming. I looked back and saw that my sister - in - law had been crushed underneath the tires of a car. I rushed to save her and saw that she was covered with blood. I took her to the hospital and had her treated. This cost a lot of money, but now she is fine. The name of this child is Ali Ajgar. He was playing in the dump yard when, suddenly, a truck ran him over. Treating him has cost 13,000 rupees so far. When his parents take him to the hospital to treat him, they do not go to work on those days. With the increasing costs, they are wondering whether or not they should continue having him treated. Sometimes companies throw their old food here such as toffees, pickle, biscuits etc. Some people eat this food or sell it. Most children eat without having washed their hands and feet and this way, diseases spread. When water does not come in the tanks, Ravia goes and gets water from a handpump. It is written in bold on this handpump that the water from this handpump is not suitable for drinking, but when water does not come in the tanks, what else can Ravia do? In monsoon, this area gets filled with water and the place becomes infested with mosquitoes and flies, which spread diseases. From the water, children contract Cholera, Hepatitis, Typhoid, Gastroenteritis, Worm Infestation. Skin infections such as Leprosy, Scabies, allergic reactions, asthma and Tetanus. Because people cannot afford many meals, 40 percent of the people living in these conditions have Tuberculosis. They are so poor that they cannot afford enough money to treat these diseases. Ravia, at such a young age, is running the family's household. Right now, she is the only healthy member. What will happen if she also falls ill? She is supposed to be going to school, but she works at the dump yard instead. This story has become the story of many children in the area.
