Teachers at East Brooklyn Community High School, a public high school serving over-age under-credited students in New York City, share how they have implemented Japanese lesson study model to improve instruction. In this model, teachers collaboratively plan a lesson about a particular focus skill, observe it being taught by one teacher, and then debrief as a group how the lesson went in order to make improvements for the next round and eventually spread it to other departments. Through this practice, teachers at East Brooklyn collaborate, share ideas, and visit one another’s classrooms more, strengthening teaching and student learning at their school.

East Brooklyn Community High School undertook this work as a member of the Multiple Pathways Institute (MPI), an initiative of the New York City Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Readiness, and received coaching provided by MPI partners Eskolta and reDesign.
