History of Australian Labour Party

Phillip Deery, Professor emeritus at the Victoria University of Melbourne, Australia, outlines the genesis of the Labour movement in the Pacific Area, and the  building of the Australian Labour Party during an interview with Mathieu Fulla, a Faculty member of the Centre d’histoire de Sciences Po (Paris). In this presentation recorded in the studio of the Fondation Jean Jaurès, Phillip Deery explains how the Australian Labour Party was influenced by more radical actors such as the Communist movement, and how it reacted to some of the great challenges of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from the Second World War and the outbreak of the Cold War to the current electoral decline of socialist parties. He also highlights the influence exerted by the Australian Labour Party on the ideological turn made by the British Labour Party under the Blair leadership from 1994 onwards. He explains that the “Third Way” ideology took some of its roots in the policies implemented by the Australian Labour governments of Bob Hawke and Paul Keating (1983-1996), thus highlighting the links between the Australian and the Western European labour movement. The Fondation Jean Jaurès and the Centre d’histoire de Science Po were delighted to welcome Phillip Deery, who also delivered a presentation in the seminar “Les Gauches et l’international” (The Left and the international arena) co-organised by Mathieu Fulla, Michele Di Donato and Bruno Settis on 21 March 2019.
