The Crusades were a series of efforts by the Christian powers of Europe to retake and secure historically held lands along the East Mediterranean coast; lands which held deep meaning to the West, having been the birthplace of Christianity. The First Crusade succeeded in retaking the Holy Land of Jerusalem, however, for a myriad of reasons, these lands were gradually lost, and each time new Crusades were launched in an effort to re-secure them, but time and time again, the subsequent Crusades would fail, with the Fourth Crusade infamously crippling the fellow Christian Empire of Byzantium, and leaving the Near East all the more vulnerable. In today's video we will ask and answer the questions of why the Crusades failed, could the Crusades realistically have worked, and of course, what if the Crusades succeeded?
