Meticulous Home: Week 1 Espresso

Carlos gave me a Meticulous Home to mess around with. I pulled around 50 shots of espresso across a few different roasts varying grind size, dose, puck preparation, and shot profile. A lot of my profiles were lower flow or pressure, so some times they lacked crema. I can make a regular 2:1 shot well enough, but I’m trying to take this machine to the max. In doing so, I let the water boil too long and that made a paint issue. So I have dropped down to 95C for most testing. I also popped the piston head off a few times. I’m not sure what causes that. Fixing it isn’t hard. The major difficulty during the shot is that the piston pulls all the way up allowing water to come into the puck for a few seconds with no pressure. This means you are the will of the water distribution of the shower screen. Carlos said they are working on software changes, so it isn’t fundamental to the hardware. I would prefer more control over the piston. I also found the water distribution from the shower screen to be an issue, but this was also connected to the piston. I tried the Matrix shower screen, but it still allows water in. The past day, I’ve been trying to modify the shower screen with tinfoil like my other machines, but the back pressure is tearing the tinfoil. This has caused me to have to innovate. Overall, it is a lovely machine and has the smallest foot print of my machines.
