Saigon (also called Ho Chi
Saigon (also called Ho Chi Minh City) is one of Vietnam's most popular cities for good reason: it has a vibrant and youthful vibe, historical buildings and monuments, and everything to make life modern and comfortable. But Saigon isn't perfect, and we'll discuss those downsides as well. We will also rate Saigon for visiting as a short term tourist, as well and for living as a long term expat. Come to Saigon with us!
𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (Summer 2023)
Everyone lives a different lifestyle, and it's impossible to know exactly how much you would be spending in Saigon. Here is a sample montly budget for us if we were living in Saigon, based on our personal lifestyle (in US dollars, for two people):
$650 Housing and Utilities
$400 Food
$50 Transportation
$150 Extras (Cell Phone, Entertainment, Clothing, etc.)
$1250 TOTAL
And here are a few more expenses that may or may not apply to your situation:
$100 Health
$300 Insurance
$150 One Trip To Visit Family In The US
$200 Two Or Three Vacations Per Year
$2000 GRAND TOTAL
𝗔 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗢𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆
Is it called Ho Chi Minh City, or is Saigon the proper name? I had always thought that this city was called Saigon before the war ended, but then the name was changed to Ho Chi Minh City after the war. This is technically true, and the official name became Ho Chi Minh City in 1975. But after coming here, we discovered that both the local residents and foreigners still quite often refer to it as Saigon. This is why I mostly refer to the city as Saigon throughout the video (and also because Saigon is easier to say than Ho Chi Minh City in the video script).
