This is a good method to load a wheelchair into a car, for use by a wheelchair-bound individual with good upper-body strength and an assistant who is weak or cannot safely lift the chair [e.g. due to a “bad back”]. The sedan has a pass-through from the back seat to the trunk allowing the passenger to pull the chair in with a rope once the chair has been positioned.

A cardboard slide protects the car and serves as an inclined plane.  The slide is long enough to avoid sliding out of the trunk when the end is extended.

A small platform is used to raise the chair enough that it readily tilts when the cord tied to the handles is pulled.  The folded chair is positioned on the platform sideways to the car and the brakes are locked. The cord is attached with a slipknot around the handles.

The nylon cord is first pulled taut.  Then the passenger grasps the cord over his left shoulder and pulls the wheelchair into the trunk. The assistant gently guides the chair as it moves.  Sometimes a small second pull is needed to complete the transfer.

Please feel free to share with anyone you know who works in healthcare or has a loved one in a wheelchair.
