4K is becoming the new craze and just about all DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and even phones have the ability to shoot in 4K now. In this video we take a look at various video resolutions to understand the benefits of shooting 4K as well as the cons of shooting 4K when compared to HD or FHD. First we look at what is 4K video by understanding 4K resolutions in relation to 720p and 1080p, and then we answer the question of should you shoot in 4K by comparing 4K vs 1080p. Some of the benefits of 4K include the ability to do a 4K crop to 1080p or stabilize your footage in a 1080p timeline without any noticeable loss in quality. Other benefits of shooting 4K vs 1080p is "future-proofing" your work and being able to charge more for the higher quality video. Some cons of shooting in 4K include camera overheating and larger video files resulting in the need for larger memory cards and hard drives as well as taking a larger toll on your computer processor. In the big picture, 4K doesn't matter because story is the most important part of filmmaking. Shooting in 4K wouldn't automatically make your story good, but it can enhance a good story!
