This clip shows the shot of Slave 1 or Boba fett's Starship leaving Cloud City from ESB. I wanted to re-create the shot using Ralph Mcquarrie's original Matte paintings, and see if I could do them justice, as I also had an awesome CGI model of Slave 1.

Some of the original buildings the Matte painting have been enhanced, replaced or added to, but I tried to keep as much of the original as I could.

The Cloud matte painting I found on the web and is used in the original movie background a few times, created by McQuarrie. I cleaned it up
and ran it through photoshop to clean up the excessive noise it had and paint out scratches and flaws. The foreground platform and building were screen captured.

Slave 1 was animated and rendered in Lightwave, as was the buildings and it was all composited in After Effects. The light effects on slave 1 are a separate pass of still images lit in a way to simulate laser flashes, same with the platform. Sparks, smoke and steam, were sourced elsewhere. Engine flames were captured from an online animated jet engine demo. Then manipulated in AFX. Lasers hand animated in AFX.

Reason for doing it? I just wanted to see if I could do it and improve over the original. I added Vader's Shuttle subtly landing on another platform in the distance and in the windows of some of the building you can see people running about trying to evacuate along with distant ships flying off.  Judge for yourself?

I also added new laser sound effects as the originals were lost in the sound mix at the time of creation of the movie, and a new engine effect sound for Slave 1, and a mechanical sound for the blasters on the ship turning into flight mode on take-off.

Slave one was created by A.Wiro in Rhino3D.
