PUNGANUR COW is the world’s smallest Bos indicus cattle originated in Punganur town in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India. This breed is known for its short stature, high milk production efficiency and efficient reproductive characters. In Ancient Ayurvedic scriptures mention various medicinal properties of cow urine. It is used as an insecticide and in disorders like intestinal gas, acidity, and cough.
The Punganur is Taluk in Chittoor District in Andhra Pradesh. Today,Punganur remained while popular dwarf cow breed has disappeared. Ongole & Punganur cattle breeds are pride of Andhra Pradesh.
The Punganur cow is the world’s shortest, humped cattle. Most of the animals are white and light grey in colour with a broad forehead and short horns. Its average height is 70-90 cms and its weight is 115-200 kg. The cow receives cosmic energy at higher magnitude, disseminates around its presence and ambiance is divine.
The cow is an amazingly efficient milker with an average milk yield of 3-5 L/day on a daily feed intake of 5 kg. It is also highly drought resistant, and able to survive exclusively on dry fodder. It is known as poorman’s cow. The cow has an aura of 120 Feet radius, receives cosmic energy at higher magnitude and disseminates all around its presence.
The body language of the cow is similar to a deer. The walking style of this Cow is beautiful. It is very auspicious to have this cow. The Punganur breed’s milk has a high fat content and is rich in medicinal properties. While cow milk normally has a fat content of 3 to 3.5 per cent,but the Punganur breed’s milk contains 6 - 8%.
The Punganur cattle are being reared mainly on the Government Livestock Farm, Palamaner, Chittoor district, while a small informal group of private breeders are also working on reviving the species. It is not officially recognized as a breed since there are only a few animals remaining.
Farmer Vallabhaneni Bhanu Prakash of Krishna District has developed Punganuru Cow Breed since 2005 onwards. Presently He is having 25 cows on his farm. Let us know his experience on Punganur cow Breeding.

చిట్టిపొట్టి ఆకృతుల్లో చూడముచ్చటైన నడకతో, అందరినీ ఆకర్షించే పుంగనూరు ఆవులు అంటే తెలుగు రాష్ట్రాల్లో ఇష్టపడని వారుండరు. ఒకప్పుడు చిత్తూరు జిల్లాలో ఎక్కువగా కనిపించే ఈ జాతి ఆవులు, క్రమేపి అంతరించి పోయే స్థితికి చేరుకున్నాయి. వ్యవసాయంలో వ్యాపార పోకడలు పెరిగిన నేపధ్యంలో, వీటి పెంపకం అంతగా లాభాదాయకంగా లేకపోవటంతో, క్రమేపి రైతులు, వీటి పెంపకానికి దూరమయ్యారు. పుంగనూరు ఆవులు పొట్టిగా... అందంగా, కనిపిస్తూ చూపరులను ఇట్టే ఆకర్షిస్తాయి. గతంలో గిత్తలను, వ్యవసాయ పనులకు కూడా ఉపయోగించేవారు. ఆవుల్లో పాల దిగుబడి తక్కువే అయినా... మేపు ఖర్చు పెద్దగా వుండదు. రోజుకు 2 నుండి 4 లీటర్ల పాలదిగుబడినిస్తాయి. పాలలో వెన్న శాతం 6 - 8 వరకు వుంటుంది. పాలలో విశిష్ఠ ఔషధ గుణాలు వుండటం వల్ల, ఆరోగ్యానికి శ్రేష్ఠమైనవిగా చెబుతారు. పుంగనూరు ఆవులు కేవలం 2.5 నుండి 3.5 అడుగుల ఎత్తు మాత్రమే పెరుగుతాయి. తీవ్రమైన క్షామ పరిస్థితులను సైతం సునాయసంగా తట్టుకుని పెరిగే స్వభావం ఈ జాతిలో వుంది. చిన్న సన్నకారు రైతులకు వీటి పెంపకం సులభంగా వున్నా, పాల కేంద్రాలు, స్థానిక మార్కెట్లో నాటు ఆవుపాలకు తగిన గుర్తింపు, సరైన మార్కెట్ ధర లేకపోవటంతో రైతులకు అంత లాభసాటిగా లేదు. దీంతో క్రమేపి ఈ జాతి అంతరించిపోయే స్థితికి చేరుకుంది.
పుంగనూరు ఆవుల విశిష్ఠత ప్రాధాన్యత గుర్తించిన కృష్ణా జిల్లా, పెదపారపూడి మండలం, ఎలమర్రు గ్రామ రైతు వల్లభనేని భాను ప్రకాష్ గత 16 సంవత్సరాలుగా వీటి పెంపకాన్ని హాబీగా మలుచుకుని, ఈ జాతి అభివృద్దికి కృషి చేస్తున్నారు. ప్రస్థుతం ఈయన ఫామ్ లో 25కు పైగా ఆవులు వున్నాయి. దాదాపు 25కు పైగా ఆవులను తోటి మిత్రులకు అందించారు. ఎన్నో విశిష్ఠ లక్షణాలు వున్న పుంగనూరు ఆవులు తెలుగు రాష్ట్రాల్లో అభివృద్ధి చెందాల్సిన ఆవశ్యకత ఎంతైన ఉందంటున్న ఈ రైతు ద్వారా వివరాలు తెలుసుకుందాం.
