You know, the last time we got a Spider-Man 2, it was pretty good! I wonder what the internet thinks of this one? OH MY GOD. Ok, let’s get something straight before we start. I know the reaction to this game has been extreme on both sides but my goal here is to take a measured approach to the game. I want to give Spider-Man 2 its flowers, but also give it fair criticism. Looking back at the game, a year out from launch, and now that all the dust has settled, it opens an opportunity to look at the game as a game, and not as a cultural event, or a tool in a larger culture war. As a game, Spider-Man 2 is beautiful, exhilarating, flawed, and perhaps most dangerous of all, overambitious. For every step forward there was a step back, and for every new feature was another that took 6 months to arrive.

The hype cycle leading to the release of Spider-Man 2 was interesting because the game looked completely new, but it was clear the DNA of the first game was still present, and the same was true for the games reception. A gameplay trailer showcased incredible visuals, but some were hyper focused on the quality of the water, giving us a sequel to puddlegate, and of course, people did whatever they could to tear the game down. Personally, I was hyped out of my mind, because Insomniac delivered well with the first game and while they weren’t without flaws, I was confident that whatever we got would be fun. Once we got it, I binged the game for about 20 hours, getting 100%, and then putting together my review in the same night where I was really positive towards it. In said review I had to lay out my biases clearly because I have a heavy Spider-Man bias, and any Spider-Man game, no matter how bad, yea, I’m looking at you Spider-Man 3, I enjoy it to some extent. That will apply to this video too. I won’t pull any punches so to speak, but do understand this is the perspective of a lifelong Spider-Man fan. That said, don’t expect this to be like most of the opinions we’ve seen online.

Spider-Man 2, the old one was one of the best Spider-Man games we ever got; is the same true for Marvel's Spider-Man 2? Well, Insomniac Spider-Man 2 is better than the OG SpiderMan 2, but the Spider-Man 2 Venom portrayal left a lot to be desired, which will not be fulfilled by DLC as it seems all the Insomniac team is working on Marvels Wolverine. This Spider-Man 2 analysis, unlike some other Spider-Man 2 critique will focus on the gameplay most, but as this is a complete Spider-man 2 retrospective, it will still pay the story it's fair share of attention. After the success of Spider-Man Miles Morales, I was hoping the Spider-Man 2 Story would be better, but according to the Insomniac leak, it seems a lot of it was cut. Spider-Man 2 1 year later is still a lot of fun, despite the internet constantly flip flopping their opinion of Marvels Spider-Man 2. This Spider-Man retrospective intends to cut through the noise, and offer a proper Spider-Man 2 critique, Spider-Man 2 analysis, and general Spider-Man 2 review to figure out the nuance. Hopefully this game is successful enough to warrant Spider-Man 3, or any new Spider-Man game like Spider-Man Silk.
