I show you how to update the firmware on your NexStar hand controller if it has version 4.xx firmware. The information on how to do this is found at

You will need cables to connect your hand controller to the PC. This first cable comes with the telescope but a replacement is available here:

Today's PCs don't have serial ports so you will need this cable:

Troubleshooting:
The USB to Serial converter cable must have driver software installed. Follow the instructions that come with the cable.
Notice how in the video I plugged in the USB cable last. If you're having trouble connecting try unplugging the USB cable and then plug it back in.
On one computer I had to change the COM port that was automatically assigned to the serial cable. You will want to bring up the device manager. On Winodws XP (possibly other operating systems too) go into the Control Panel and select System to bring up the System Properties window. On the hardware tab is a button that will bring up the Device Manager. Find the Ports (COM & LPT) item and expand that (click on the + sign). Find the USB-to-Serial Comm Port and right click on it and select "Properites" from the pop-up menu. On the Port Settings tab click on the Advanced... button. Now you can change the COM port to another number which might help.
