In this video, we will go through how to draw Haworth projections of both L and Glucose from a Fischer Projection. I will go through a step by step process of how to number your carbons, determine your ring size, draw your OH groups for your projections.

I will also discuss alpha and beta anomers and how you know which version you will have in most introductory biochemistry courses and problems. Alpha and Beta anomers exist in a state of equilibrium due to the monosaccharide ring being able to open and close. Meaning that both alpha and beta exist naturally within the cell and the body. We will also briefly discuss the concept of mutarotation as well.

0:00 Introduction to Carbohydrates
0:36 Step 1: Draw the Enantiomer of your Fischer Projection
2:52 Step 2: Rotation Structure Clockwise 90 degrees for Top/Bottom
4:34 Step 3: Determine Ring Size (5 or 6 Carbons)
7:27 Step 4: Build your projection, place top and bottom, and CH2OH (L or D)
12:21 Step 5: Alpha or Beta? Anomers Explained!
