STORYLINE:
Thousands of Yemenis in the Houthi rebel-controlled capital Sanaa demonstrated on Friday in a show of solidarity with Palestinians in war-stricken Gaza and anger at Israel and the United States.
The Iran-backed group has organised protests nearly every Friday since the war between Israel and Hamas erupted on October 7.
Demonstrators were seen holding Palestinian flags, placards of the Houthis' official slogan and pictures of rebel leader Abdel Malek al-Houthi.
Since November, the Houthi rebels have targeted ships in the Red Sea to demand a cease-fire on Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
They have frequently attacked vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, imperilling shipping in a key route for trade among Asia, the Mideast and Europe.
In recent weeks, the United States and the United Kingdom, backed by other allies, have launched airstrikes targeting Houthi missile arsenals and launch sites for its attacks.
