Dr. Mark Vaughan consults with Dr. Gawayne Vaughan regarding options for treatment of a possible squamous cell carcinoma on a patient's hand. They agree that a shave biopsy would be the best course of action for the patient. This way a possible skin cancer would be identified and a check would be made for complete removal. Treating the lesion with liquid nitrogen cryotherapy would likely destroy the lesion, but there would be a small risk of incompletely destroying cancer cells which could continue to grow locally or even spread.
The pathology results found squamous cell carcinoma. The margins were clear. No further treatment is needed for this cancer which was cured by this removal. Annual full body skin surveys are recommended to catch future lesions early.
