An ancient landscape of sulphur, pumice, and obsidian erupts from the Tyrrhenian Sea just off Sicily's western coast in the southernmost region of Italy. The Aeolian Islands (Isole Eolie) are a group of seven UNESCO-protected islands produced over millennia by volcanic activity.
The Aeolian Islands are sparsely inhabited and slow-moving, but they provide stunning scenery, unique traditions, lovely communities, and wonderful honest food. In the deep volcanic soils, capers, figs, olives, wild fennel, and lemons the size of your fist abound.
The ultimate sundowner is a glass of Malvasia sweet wine, the islands' most popular export. Each of the seven Aeolian Islands has a unique terrain and set of attractions. Some of the highlights include hiking extinct (and active!) volcanoes, basking on black sand beaches, and exploring the spectacular rock formations and caves off the shore.
The Aeolian Islands have everything of Capri's or Sardinia's majesty and grandeur, but without the overdevelopment and, for the most part, without the crowds. It's far from an "undiscovered" place, but we believe it is a hidden gem.
This is exactly the type of vacation spot we enjoy, but a trip to Sicily was never in the cards. That is, until my aunt married a native and purchased a home on Salina Island.
