Update - The catch spring fix was actually more complicated than Leah originally expected. The entire tension unit in the top of the machine had to be replaced and it took a month for the part to come in.

But because the machine was purchased from a Janome dealer, it was still under warranty and the repair didn't cost me anything out of pocket.
