Ново-Николаевск was founded in 1893 at the future site of the Trans-Siberian Railway bridge that would cross the great Siberial River of Ob. Ново-Николаевск was named in honour of both Saint Nicholas and the reigning emperor, Nicholas II. When the bridge was completed in 1897, the settlement became the regional transport centre. The importance of the city further increased with the completion of the Turkestan-Siberia Railway in the early 20th century. The new railway connected Novonikolayevsk to Central Asia and the Caspian Sea. In 1907, Novonikolayevsk was granted towwn status. During these years the city expanded greatly and with it, rapid economic growth. The city became one of the largest commercial and industrial centres of Siberia.
The city was given its present name of Novosibirsk on September 12, 1926.........
