Metformin is also known as the brand name: Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Fortamet, Glumetza

Metformin is most commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes or to help control blood sugar. No matter what your doctor has you taking if for, metformin is usually taken by mouth once or twice daily with a meal. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking metformin.

Standard dosing of metformin ranges from 500 mg, 850 mg, and 1000 mg

Some common side effects with metformin include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and gas.
Some less common side effects with metformin include pain in the chest or flushing red, heart burn, headache, trouble tasting, skin rash, low blood sugar, weakness or muscle pain.  

While taking metformin, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
 If you are on any other diabetes medicines
 If you are pregnant
 If you have liver or kidney disease or heart failure
 If you have swelling
 If you have fast breathing, feel cold, or muscle pain or cramping because this could be a sign of lactic acid in the blood
