This is very true that they are vulnerable to ear infections. Luckily, it's simple to scrub their ears at home. There are a few vital things that you must need to know about dogs’ ears:

First. They’re sensitive so that they need a regular checkup to avoid infections.
Second. They don’t like getting their ears cleaned, so you have to work little hard with them.
Third. If you don’t do it the right way, you’ll cause some serious harm.
Fourth. Never use Q-tips to clean the ears neither of small dogs nor big dogs because they can damage the eardrum.
Fifth. Don’t forcefully insert the nozzle of the bottle inside the ear and never pour the solution straight down in the vertical ear canal. Just pour it along the sidewall of the ear.

This question must have come into your mind many times. So today, i'll answer you question - Why cleanse a dog’s ear?

That’s a problem if your dog scratches his or her ears constantly because the bacteria or yeast has bred in their ears. Continuous scratching can result in lesions and open wounds. So, It is necessary to treat the infection as if it is left to escalate, it will progress to the middle or inner ear, which can affect their balance and hearing. So, early prevention can save them from experiencing unnecessary pain and further complications later on

How to spot the problem

If you see an unusual behavior like Excessive ear scratching or head shaking or notice anything like
1. Redness inside the ear flap
2. A musty odor
3. Discharge
4. Swelling
5. Off balance
6. Reduced hearing ability
7. Vomiting and nausea
Then it’s time to book an appointment with your vet.

Now
Get prepared.

First, before start cleaning, examine your dog’s ear. This will give you an idea of how dirty they are and do they need a cleanup or not.
This cleanup job is a messy job which makes you and your surrounding area dirty as dogs tend to shake their head during the procedure. So, The best place to clean their ears is in the tub or outside and it is a great thing to do just before a bath.

What all you need?
We’re going to need 5 things:
Ear cleaning solution: Make sure the cleanser contains no antibiotics, steroids, alcohol, or toxic materials of any kind, as they can cause irritation and should be at room temperature as dogs don’t like it cool.

Cotton balls: To clean the inside of both ears.

Towel: I’m sure you don’t want ear muck and solution all over on you or your sofa.

Grooming forceps:  To pluck the ear hair as they block the air flow and traps wax which promotes the infection or bacteria to breed.
Treats: Give treats every time after each step for being so cooperative and a good dog throughout the process.

Let’s get to the nasty work
The first thing to do is keep all the things within your reach because I’m sure you don't wanna start over the whole process from the halfway.

The very first step is to Create a calm environment and make them feel relaxed by gently petting them. Start slowly ‘n’ smoothly and offer them treats while you touch their ears.

Second step.
Hold the ear flap up straight and insert the nozzle into the ear near the opening and gently squeeze the bottle to fill the canal with cleanser.

Third step.
Bring your hands down the base of the ear which is the bottom part of the ear where cartilage can be felt. Massage gently for 20-30 seconds which will ensure the solution reaches all parts of the inner ear and releases stubborn debris.

The fourth step is ‘Shake it off!’
Your dog will shake his/her head vigorously, tossing all the dirt and cleanser with it. You might turn away or hold up a towel for this part. Now you know why I suggested the bathroom.

The Last step
Now clean all the muck from the ear flap and around the ear opening with a moistened cotton in water or gauze with your finger to wipe out the ear canal and finish by drying their head off.

Give treats and plenty of praise: But stop if your dog's ear begins to get red or bleed or they seem to be in pain.
And it’ done.
