The ones Borges read to us were Don Quixote by Cervantes.

Ficciones is one of Jorge Luis Borges' most widely read books. It includes stories like La Biblioteca de Babel, Las ruinas circulares, Tema del traidor y del héroe, Funes el memorioso, and the one that's relevant to us today: Pierre Menard, author of Don Quixote.
There's more to this than just a nod from the Argentine writer to Cervantes. But Borges makes a great use of irony that blurs the line between fiction and reality.
I've often wondered what Borges thought of Cervantes' work, especially after reading Pierre Menard.

Fortunately, I came across this interview with Joaquín Soler Serrano on Spanish TV at some point.

Borges shows a lot of thought and depth in his ideas. He talks about Cervantes' work in a way that's really inspiring. He says that Don Quixote de la Mancha changed literature and captured the essence of the human condition in a way that's always relevant.
