*Why the LANGE 1 is Such an Important Watch | RANT&H*
In this week's episode of RANT&H, Christian dives into A. Lange & Sohne "Lange 1," and why the piece is not just a beautiful design, but an incredibly important watch in general.
So what is the Lange 1? Well, it's a piece released by the then revitalized (thanks Walter) A. Lange & Sohne, a brand described by many as the German Patek Philippe (though, honestly, I kind of dig them a bit more than Patek sometimes; oh well) in 1994. It's made incredibly recognizable by it's slightly asymmetrical dial featuring every facet of the watch's function displayed on its own separate subdial, save, of course, the now signature "big date" display. Sure, Lange didn't invent the "big date" (or did they? I'm honestly not sure.), but they did, in their own way, make it an icon.
On a historical level, the Lange brand has had a bit of a rocky past. At their initial inception in the 1930s, the brand became a sensation for producing some of the highest quality timepieces imaginable, especially at the time. So high quality, in fact, that they acquired themselves a bit of an uber fan. Unfortunately, that uber fan was Adolf Hitler. The upper echelons of the Third Reich were so fond of the brand, in fact, that after they fell, the brand went right down with them. Also, f**ck Nazis.
So when, some fifty years on, the founder's great-grandson Walter relaunched the brand, it was a bit of a big to-do. The newly revitalized A. Lange & Sohne was launched with four models: the Arcade, the Saxonia, the tourbillon, and the Lange 1. Of course, the model line has expanded pretty significantly over the years, and changes to each of those models have been made in stride, but at the core, Lange has remained one of the last true family brands in modern horology, and one of the most influential of our time.
