The difference in an annulment and absolute divorce are both similar and different in many ways. With both, you would be separated from your spouse, however there are certain prerequisites that must be met to qualify for an annulment.
To qualify for an annulment you must meet one of these criteria:
1. One of the parties were impotent.
2. The parties weren't able to consummate the marriage.
3. One of the parties were underage.
4.  One of the parties did not have mental capacity to make the decision to get married.

If you think you qualify for an annulment, you should speak with an attorney and they will help guide you in the right direction, whether it is following through with an annulment of separating for a year and moving forward with an absolute divorce.
