Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), explained on Wednesday the organization’s decision to cut the isolation period for those who test positive for COVID-19 to five days.

Walensky says that science indicates “most of the transmission potential” from the virus occurs within the first two days before and three days after developing symptoms.

“So, this was really a way to tell people; make sure you isolate in the first five days when you are maximally infectious. And then of course, wear a mask for those last five days to make sure that you don’t spread anything that might be left over to others,” she added.

Walensky says 85 to 90 per cent of all transmission occurs during those five days after becoming infected.
