Hello all,
Welcome back to another heritage video.
This time we head to the Puffing Billy Railway to witness the first run of a new locomotive, NG G16 129.
The special occasion was one for the history books, as we also saw the first occurrence of double heading Garratt locomotives on the Gembrook Line.
The NG G16 class Garrett locomotive was built between 1937 and 1968 for use on the South African Railways. They operated on African standard gauge, which was 2ft.
This particular locomotive, number 129, was built by Beyer-Peacock as part of the third order of NG G16 locomotives which were introduced in 1937. 129 was bought by the PBRS during mid 1990s and arrived in their museum in 1996. It was decided to return the locomotive to running condition as a backup locomotive for their Victorian Railways G class narrow gauge Garratt, G42.
The restoration for use on the PBR also meant the need to convert the locomotive from 2ft to 2ft 6in gauge. During 2019 the locomotive did a number of tests till finally during mid December, the locomotive pulled its first load of passengers.
