10 July 1962
the International Wheat Agreement of 1962 and South Africa's decision to sign it:
The International Wheat Agreement of 1962 was a global treaty aiming to stabilize and cooperate in the wheat market. It promoted stable prices, adequate supplies, and facilitated trade between nations. The agreement included provisions such as export controls, a buffer stock scheme, price consultations, and information exchange.
South Africa, being a significant wheat producer and consumer, had reasons to sign the agreement. By participating, they could benefit from stable wheat prices, reducing volatility for farmers and consumers. It also provided improved market access for exports and ensured a steady supply during shortages. Joining allowed South Africa to engage in international discussions, influence policies, and collaborate with other nations on agricultural matters.
Although the International Wheat Agreement expired in 1981 after undergoing revisions, it played a crucial role in promoting stability and cooperation in the global wheat market during its existence.
