This is a counterflow furnace I turned into a "trainer" so that other students could use it to experience and diagnose various faults. Likewise, an instructor could also place faults in it for students to find.

A cover for the switch bank should probably be added. In its original application, it was on the other side of a board, where it could not easily be seen.

The Honeywell control board and "smart valve" seem very primitive. Bad solder joints are reported to be a common problem with the valve itself and I found one on the control board as well. (For your own safety and reasons of insurance coverage and/or liability, NEVER EVER repair one of these boards, no matter how minor the problem. The only safe thing to do is to replace the board or valve. You have been warned.) It's my understanding that some smart valves were subject to recalls.

This Heil furnace was manufactured in the 45th week of 1997, in case anyone happens to care.
