Two weeks after the initial landings carried out by the Tanaka and Kanno Detachments from the 2nd Formosa Infantry Regiment of the 48th Division at Aparri and Vigan, which resulted in remarkable success, on December 22nd, the main body of the 14th Imperial Japanese Army came ashore at Lingayen Gulf, while only two days later the Japanese mounted a secondary effort at Lamon Bay with the bulk of the 16th Division, and in the face of relentless Japanese advancement, the Philippine forces employed strategic withdrawals and valiant rearguard actions to delay their progress.
