Iron (Fe) is present in relatively small amounts in natural waters. The main sources of Fe in natural waters are the processes of chemical weathering of geological materials, which lead to their destruction and transformation of Fe form solid compounds to soluble or colloidal forms.
In natural and wastewaters, Fe may occur in soluble form, in a colloidal state, in organic or inorganic Fe complexes or in relatively coarse suspended particles. Iron Compounds may be either ferrous or ferric, suspended or dissolved. Iron is a micronutrient required by living organisms, and therefore an essential and desirable constituent of natural waters. High concentrations of Fe are not known to have any adverse health effects however they may lead to other problem such as rusting.
