Rook endgames are one of the most common and probably the most complex of all endings. There are a huge amount of theoretical positions and patterns, which makes it difficult for most of the chess players to remember all of them. However, some of these key positions occur very often in real games and if you know how to play or what plan to apply, you will increase your chances to win the game. Key positions like the Philidor, the Lucena or the Vancura positions should be studied, understood and even memorized, as sometimes you only need to know the technique in order to win or save the game. In this video, GM Alex Ipatov is covering the basics of rook endgames when one side has a pawn on the a- or h-file.
In rook endgames with a- or h-pawns, you have to remember the following things:
- One file in between the defensive king and the promoting pawn + king is not enough. The game will end in a draw.
- If the defensive king is cut-off by two files, the side with the extra pawn is also not able to win the endgame. It will also end in a draw.
- If the defensive king is cut-off by three files, it is still a draw. All the winning plans are still too slow.
- Only if the defensive king is cut-off by four files, then you will be able to win the endgame. The plan to bring over the rook is then not too slow. Just in time you bring the rook into the right position to make it possible to promote the pawn.
- If the defensive king is cut-off by four files, it is usually enough to win the game. The rook will be brought for example to the b8-square so that you can move your king away from the a8-square and to try to promote the (passed) pawn.
